7:30 pm
welcome back to the big picture i'm tom hartman coming up in this half hour in a moment we'll be taking your calls in our new york take my take it live segment so you have something to say or ask it was call it to a tune i know for twenty one thirty four and if you watch last night's debate very closely you might have seen ronnie reagan and jimmy carter going at it not mitt romney president obama and that's not a good thing i'll explain why it's still a take.
7:31 pm
a while come to your take my take a lie the phone lines are now open so if you want to share opinion make a comment as a question live on the air give us a call to a two not a four twenty one thirty four let's pick up the first caller the night lateesha in richmond texas welcome to the program. wallow i you're on the air so your comment question. you need to turn down your somebody and just listen to the telephone talk to me on the telephone hello thank you. yes. thanks for having me my concern is the nurse out of the. ok. you need to turn down your t.v. because the there's a so there's a delay and it'll confuse on there are better yeah yeah you just just talk to me on the telephone and then after we're done you can turn t.v.
7:32 pm
back up so what's what i am which. i my concern is that i'm a registered nurse and practice and. so we all. know i hear you just fine if you're hearing anything coming back just ignore it and talk. and my thing is health care reform. and i'm working in health care. and my concern is why. anybody don't think that everybody's health care. if they gave up their place in teach because they have concierge service isn't going to the people who really need because there will be people and they can afford their own health care insurance why they think when you go to the hospital because i see people turned away ok i know my own ah and your i will survive they give up their health care insurance and they're all and then we can have the money available for the wealthy the debate that we've been having in
7:33 pm
this country for a long long time is what is a right and what is a privilege and the position the position that the right wingers have taken from time immemorial in the united states is that health care is not a right it's a privilege i would submit that when thomas jefferson wrote in the declaration of independence life liberty and pursuit of happiness and that's why we were creating this country you can't have a right to life without health care you can't be alive if you're sick and you can't get well so leticia i'm totally with you and i appreciate your call and making that that point i think you made a very very well and and and what we need to do is point out i think to more people more often that every other developed country in the world believes of the thirty four we see the countries the organization of economic cooperation developing the most developed countries every other country in the world believes at that health care is a right not a privilege we're the only one that doesn't say it's a right and that was ted kennedy's big thing it should be a right norman grass valley california
7:34 pm
a norm you're on the air don't try our today i'm great but i'll get better how about you know i'm doing fine so what's the. more of a statement than a question and it has to do about the debate from last night when i knew there would be lies in the village men and more lies deception and numbers that they couldn't quote right off the top of their so i watched the debate on the spanish station i found it morning pertaining and. that's interesting so you watch the debate what dubbed in spanish is on the spanish station you speak spanish i didn't realize i found it more enjoyable you speak spanish no i don't. feel funny because what i really should i knew was going to be a lie i get a little ok a lot of it nor my perspective and. frankly if i had watched the thing with the sound off it would have made me even crazier because one of the big concerns i have is that whoever was prepping and coaching
7:35 pm
president obama really blew it i mean they did not get the importance the consequence of body language they really i mean his eye he looked down and he was looking down and writing and there romney was boring into him constantly you know with his eyes and that's it hurt him i think it really seriously hurt him nathan in los angeles nathan. page i think you're thinking michael. i really think that obama just needs to be more direct he's incredibly eloquent he's an amazing orator but i think i think he did contradict and defend you know everything that mitt romney came out with you know came out of with last night but he did it so eloquently that i think most people missed it i think he just needs to respond directly with what the governor said is just not true here is the fact. i think it will hit home so much more you know you need that impact so you wanted more taking names and kickin but kind of stuff. and you know it's not so much you know if you
7:36 pm
start but i think he can still do that but but here's here's the thing at the age it's. the oratory and dial directly but you know that impaired but nathan hecht yeah he did he did i bet a rabbit back nathan i think it's going to come back and bite him in the butt i think it's going to hurt romney and appreciate your perspective and i understand what you're saying but the president i mean keep in mind there are multiple dynamics here and this was i brought this up on the radio today mitt romney when he when when these guys set down and focus grouped how mitt romney was going to call the president a liar and trust me six eight ten twelve people sat in a room and work this out how are we going to at how are we going to call the president a liar so the president can't call romney a liar how do you diffuse that well let's tell a story let's tell a story about romney's sons or that old t.v.
7:37 pm
show my three sons romney's youngest son is thirty four years old and so they they ordered they they decided literally the words i mean the probably spent a half a day or several hours at the very least what is the sentence what's the zinger going to be the calls the president a liar. ok let's use the president's sons as an example everybody knows kids sometimes lie and but they're thirty four years old let's not call them sons let's call them boys. so you've got white guy mitt romney. is saying he said to the first african-american president of states he said my boy yes. and so there's this there's this whole other level of dynamic that's really important to get when president obama went on c.b.s. news this was literally two or three months ago and use the word damn he simply used the word damn or that there was an interview and he said you know i'm. damned
7:38 pm
something i don't remember the exact phrase but. the headline on drudge the next day was obama goes street giant letters everybody was all freaked out about what it was and all these and the and this is and then today you had sununu coming out calling him lazy last night it was new talking about rhythm and the day before yesterday it was sean hannity going on it is terrible oh my god he can talk with a black accent you know we never knew you know this blogger in the white house so he's navigating some very very very dangerous waters there read him and say east st louis illinois he read what's what's on your mind actually fairmount city illinois town thank you hey you got one of the best news programs on t.v. i don't really have a question but i want to compliment you on your direction when i'm barely started in truth thank you what really is going on and another thing is it's a shame that a lot of people here in the midwest don't even know you guys are on the air for
7:39 pm
dish is this t.v. is the only one in the police to direct charter cable none of the others have archie which actually we're trying to change but yeah well we're working on it read five per share call and thank you for your kind words and you know step by step we're getting there paul in mesa arizona hey paul welcome to the program anytime thank you so much i would first like to say i'm a mormon and a republican but i'm voting for president obama because he wants to invest hard earned dollars into green energy education i heard mr romney last night say you want two trillion dollars more for defense when we have war and gas and maybe he doesn't realize in warning that the good soldiers there is room good soldiers and troops is going to bankrupt bob country to keep going this way calmer and you've got a great show yeah thank you paul thank you very much and i appreciate your comments and your you're taking the time to call in tonight mary jo and for washington maryland and i should by by the way i should add you know the caller saying that he
7:40 pm
could only find us on one network. we're in over. over one hundred and fifty countries in over five hundred million homes and in the united states in between free speech t.v. in our t.v. in over fifty five million homes so we're out there. you can also watch us online mary jo fort washington maryland hey mary jo welcome to the program how you doing thank you very much for taking my call and i love your show thank you so much for the truth i accidentally stepped over the fox i was going to throw up some of the most ridiculous debate i ever thought in my life and my every time i'm watching the bait like president obama was not there whatever it vies he was given he should not have taken it he should have come out with the fist up in the air punching that man for every lie that he told he lied so much that i just started to go is this a debate or it is just mitt romney's day and also after a while it turned into mitt versus mitt yeah you know it is like president obama
7:41 pm
all he had to do was call up the lies he could just use the forty seven percent for the thirty eight minutes and that would take care of that and i hope that in the next debate he comes out swinging you know he's got to be that he can't be the calm manner person we don't need that mitt romney isn't the way to do is tell him the truth mary jo from your lips to god's ears and hopefully the president will appreciate what you have to say and get it and say oh yeah ok that's it but we'll see i mean his advisors my question the thing in my mind it concerns me that wakes me up in the line is if president obama did what he did last night i thought ok we're going to play this soft because visors told him to and he lived in a bubble and he doesn't you know he doesn't watch cable news he doesn't know you know how how hot everything is going on will he still be in the bubble will the next debate be the same i don't think so we'll see ronnie in philly we have a minute to the break ronnie what's welcome to the program what's on your money
7:42 pm
thank you. it's why don't they gregor thanks to this group under the rico laws because the the rico laws are the organized the organized crime laws they were the racketeering influence and corrupt organizations i believe is what i never did want to do that against proposition right but the problem it with the rico laws is they were so specifically crafted for the mafia back in the in the sixty's that you can't use them for a lot of things that frankly i think they should be used for i think they should be used against the banks toure's i think they should be used against the military industrial complex i think that there's a you know there's a whole variety of folks that the rico laws should be able to be used against but what we have to do is we have to pass a whole new set of ronnie appreciate your call thank you so much for watching the show tonight and for being a caller on our very first night of your take my take was. coming up among the things that can be taken away from last night's debate is the fact that it looked an awful lot like reagan debating carter in one thousand nine
7:43 pm
hundred and we all know how that worked out for america how can president obama avoid becoming the next jimmy carter i'll tell you that i believe that. you know sometimes you see a story and it seems so. you think you understand it and then you glimpse something else and you hear or see some other part of it and realized everything you thought you knew you don't know i'm tom harpur welcome to the big picture.
7:44 pm
here is mitt romney trying to figure out the name of that thing that we americans call a dollar. i'm sorry i missed the guy who cares an awful lot of what you say are if you know what kind of terrorist cells you. want to give us a defeat terrorism the only liberal the christian. can feel the support of the. guerrillas are going to distract us from what you and i should care about because they're profit driven industry that sells a sensationalistic garbage he calls it breaking news i'm having martin and we're going to break that.

ok it's thursday time to get geeky on planet earth and we're at the earth's sounds like. that was the sound of planet earth singing in space courtesy of nasa is calling it the clearest recording ever made of what they call corus which is the audio version of the radio signals that are emitted by plasma waves that are part of the earth's
7:46 pm
van allen radiation belts the van allen radiation belt seen here are two layers of energetically charged particles or plasma that are around the earth and that are held in place by the planets magnetic field the belts are thought to be made of a variety of particles with some particles that come from the solar wind and others from cosmic rays according to craig quite seeing a physics professor who is part of the team at nasa the collective the sounds the mysterious sound is quote what the radiation belts would sound like to a human being if we had radio antennas for ears and quote to capture the chorus of sound cloud saying and a team of nasa engineers design something called the electric and magnetic field instrument suite and integrated science with a type of signal receiver that's attached to two separate nasa probes that are currently orbiting the earth after releasing earth's chorus as a noted that ham radio operators like me have you wait until you will have been able to listen to the sounds made by earth's plasma ways for years but never with
7:47 pm
such quality and clarity as the chorus there's no doubt that it's chorus is pretty unique but besides being super cool to listen to what else is it is the recording good for well according to nasa the recording could help scientists discover the impact the plasma waves have on the periodic appearance of killer electrons by most electrons that are in the plasma waves of van allen belts are harmless some killer electrons become so highly energized that they have the potential damage satellite spacecraft and even cause health problems for astronauts in space so now when you look up into space and see all the light from the various stars and planets just a lot of sweet music to. it's the good the bad and the very very broke varos stratus li ugly the

good carleton college college a small college in minnesota passed a campus wide resolution earlier this week opposing minnesota's proposed constitutional amendment that bans same sex marriage or opposing the resolution states that the amendment would quote undermine and impede the college's efforts to recruit and retain the very best students faculty and staff members and. our nation's colleges and universities should be places of respect and safety for all students regardless of their sexual orientation members of the community are just as hardworking just as intelligent and just as driven as anyone else kudos to karl for standing up to the bigotry and ignorance that is trying to take over the state of minnesota. the bad the anti immigrant group which wants to limit if not stop illegal immigration we're not talking illegal and legal immigration released a new ad yesterday that employs an interesting and all too common tactic. i'm tired
7:49 pm
of stereotype the black americans don't want to work i worked hard my whole life when i got laid off and i've got to feel. i need a job what i don't understand is why our leaders are going to the middle of the million immigrant workers next year to take jobs when three million black americans can't find work. i mean do our leaders really believe the black americans don't want to work. let's slow down mass immigration and save jobs for americans all americans paid for by numbers usa don't or so in order to further their goal of the wiping out immigration in the united states numbers usa has decided to pit the african-american community against illegal immigrants in our country. and a very very ugly judge charles c. law if you want more proof that corporate corruption and greed have taken over our judicial system take a look at judge love level appointed to the federal bench in montana by ronald reagan issued his sweeping decision earlier today striking down montana's law that
7:50 pm
limits political campaign contributions and as if the decision isn't bad enough level issued it without providing any explanation of his reasoning instead level said he would issue his reasoning in due course because he wanted the order to be issued before the upcoming election in the judicial world it is nearly unheard of for a judge to issue a ruling without giving an explanation that doesn't say that levels bench has been bought off by corporate interests i don't know what does and that is very very. watching last night's debate i kept thinking to myself i've seen this debate before ya know the first time romney and obama ever actually debated each other in fact i
7:51 pm
think it's one of the few times that both men of even appear on stage together but i just knew that i'd seen this debate before and then you know being an old geezer it struck me last night's debate was one nine hundred eighty all over again i remember that it was reagan vs carter i've said many times that the only way that mitt romney can win the election is to lie well the same was true of ronald reagan . as a center for american progress pointed out this morning mitt romney told twenty seven lies and half truths in the course of just the thirty eight minutes that he spoke during the debate last night this is really a staggering feat if you think about it but one that was easily pulled off because the moderator wasn't calling out any of the lies and frankly and tragically neither was president obama or romney also pulled it off by using the ronald reagan strategy of saying what ever it takes to win just so long as you say it since the
7:52 pm
early and with a smile take a look at how ronald reagan wide his way through the one nine hundred eighty debate first talking about a meeting a had with young african-americans about the minimum wage. and the president spoke a moment ago about what i was against the minimum wage. i wish he could have been with me when i said with a group of teenagers who were black and who were telling me about their unemployment problems and that it was the minimum wage they had done away with the jobs that they once could get. that's a lie it was later debunked ronald reagan never sat with a group of african-american teenagers who talked about the minimum wage hurting them and you know in fact people tried to track down those people just like they tried to track down his famous welfare queen couldn't find it but he said it sincerely just like he talked sincerely when he took credit for creating workplace legislation as governor of california. we created an ocean an
7:53 pm
occupational safety and health agency for the protection of employees before the federal government had one in place and to this day not one of his decisions or rulings has ever been challenged so i think some of those charges are missing the point i suggest not true again osha was passed by democrats in california over ronald reagan's objections talk sincerely and people will believe it actually large parts of what was ocean in california was set up long before ronald reagan it which any out sets up this claim made by reagan against the department of energy catch this the department of energy as a multi-billion dollar budget in excess of ten billion dollars it hasn't produced a quarter of oil or a lump of coal or anything else in the line of energy use that's a straw man no one ever said that the department of energy creates energy it's absurd and reagan knows it the department of energy builds nuclear bombs they renamed it back in the day you know so that people wouldn't get upset about the
7:54 pm
budget or something the bomb making agency didn't sound so good but it doesn't refine oil. reagan knew it was a great talking point and he knew that he had to be willing to say what ever it takes to win as long as he says it's sincere. and so mitt romney did the same thing he lied about his own tax plan a lot about the president's medicare reforms he lied about his own medicare plans he lied about wall street reform he lied about the president's green energy investments he lied about death panels he lied about small businesses he lied about the deficit he lied about the national federation of independent businesses he lied about cuts to the military but you know what he talks and surly just like reagan and that's why today he's been declared the winner of the debate in the mainstream media instead of being declared the loser by virtue of lives but the similarities don't end there romney is running to govern just like reagan did.
7:55 pm
and i think it has been evident in most of the answers that mr carter's given tonight that he seeks the solution to anything as another opportunity for a federal government program and what we're seeing right now is in my view a a trickle down government approach which has government thinking it can do a better job than free people pursuing their dreams and it's not working i am suggesting that there are literally thousands of unnecessary regulations that invade every facet of business and indeed very much of our personal lives that are unnecessary what's happened with some of the legislation that's been passed during the president's term you've seen regulation become excessive and it's hurt the it's hurt the economy free enterprise can do a better job of producing the things that people need then government can free people and free enterprise is try to find ways to do things better are able to be more effective in bringing down the cost of the government will ever be the call that the president mentioned yes we haven't yet one eighth of our total resources

is not being utilized at all right now the mines are closed down there are twenty two thousand miners out of work most of this is due to regulations which either interfere with the mining of it or prevent the burning of it i like coal i want to make sure we can get to burn clean coal people in the coal industry feel like it's getting crushed by your policies. i hope the president's people saw what i saw in the debate last night out jimmy carter's faith is haunted today because of the next few debates go the way this first one was and president obama could be the next jimmy carter a one term president taken down by a serial liar funded by billionaires and mitt romney will move into the white house to finish what reagan started which is completely deconstructing killing off tearing apart piece by piece from social security all the way to unemployment insurance franklin roosevelt's new deal and romney will also appoint a few new supreme court justices to preserve the reagan revolution for another
7:57 pm
thirty years and in fact maybe even make it worse. this folks could be the last nail in the coffin of the american middle class and the american dream especially if romney gets to a point to three supreme court justices i mean this is the school leah supreme court justice world view is literally back to the to the teens the one thousand nine hundred and that is to do away with child labor laws and you know all accounts and and that's the way it is the night thursday october fourth two thousand and twelve for more information and of the stories we covered visit our website to tom free speech or go to our team dot com if you missed any of the night's show you can now watch on the h.d. on hulu at hulu dot com slash the big picture also check out our two you tube channels there are links to tom harkin dot com also tom hartman icon check out all the different ways you can send us your feedback and oh forget democracy begins when you get out there get active take your suitable.
